Centralized AI Safety Controls Now Generally Available

Amazon Web Services today announced the general availability of cross-account safeguards in Amazon Bedrock Guardrails, a feature that lets organizations enforce safety policies uniformly across all AWS accounts in an enterprise. The new capability allows a single guardrail—defined in the management account—to automatically apply to every Amazon Bedrock model invocation across member accounts, organizational units (OUs), and individual accounts.

“This is a game-changer for enterprises that need to maintain consistent responsible AI standards without micromanaging each account separately,” said Dr. Swami Sivasubramanian, Vice President of AI at AWS. “Now, security teams can set it and forget it, knowing that every inference call is protected by the same corporate guardrails.”

Background

Amazon Bedrock Guardrails is a safety layer for generative AI applications, blocking harmful content, filtering prompts, and enforcing custom policies. Previously, each AWS account had to configure its own guardrails manually, leading to inconsistencies and administrative overhead.

With the new cross-account enforcement, organizations can define a guardrail in the management account, and it will automatically protect all member accounts from the same baseline rules. This includes content filters for hate speech, violence, and regulated information, as well as custom topic restrictions.

What This Means

For enterprises, this eliminates the burden of monitoring compliance across dozens or hundreds of accounts. Security teams no longer need to verify configurations individually, reducing risk of misconfiguration. The feature also supports granular control: account-level or application-specific overrides can be layered on top of the organization-wide policy, offering flexibility without sacrificing uniformity.

“You get consistent protection by default, but you can still tailor rules for different teams or use cases,” said Sivasubramanian. “That balance is crucial for scaling generative AI adoption in regulated industries.”

The enforcement can be configured to include or exclude specific models, and administrators can choose between Comprehensive mode (guardrail all prompts) or Selective mode (targeted filtering). This allows IT teams to phase in protections gradually.

Getting Started

To enable cross-account safeguards, administrators create a guardrail with a fixed version in the AWS Management Console, ensuring immutability. Then, under the new Account-level enforcement configurations section, they select the guardrail and region. For organization-wide enforcement, a policy is set in the management account that propagates to all members.

Prerequisites include setting up resource-based policies for guardrails. Once configured, the guardrail automatically applies to all Bedrock inference API calls from the account. This works across all AWS Regions where Bedrock is available.

Enterprise Impact

This launch addresses a critical pain point for large organizations: maintaining responsible AI guardrails at scale. Prior to this, each team might have accidentally disabled safety filters or used outdated versions, creating liabilities. Now, the management account holds the authoritative policy, and any deviation is prevented.

“Centralized control means the corporate standard is non-negotiable at the member account level,” noted Sivasubramanian. “It’s a huge step toward trustworthy AI deployment.”

The feature also reduces audit complexity. Compliance teams can now verify policy adherence from a single pane of glass, rather than sampling individual accounts. AWS plans to add further monitoring and reporting capabilities in future updates.
